7005 alloy frames do not require heat treat if welded correctly. That is why Easton devoloped the alloy.

I always thought it was t'other way round and it was 6000 series that didn't need heat treating as it air hardens which is why all the small U.S. builders used it and 7000 series did need post welding heat treatment hence it's use in the Far Eastern factories.? :?

6000 series always requires heat treating,7000 doesn't.The main reason US builders use 6000 and Far eastern factories use 7000 is that they are each more readily available in those home markets hence a Zaskar LE was 6061 and a Avalanche was 7005.

Right. 6061 takes a few seconds or minutes only to anneal, 7005 takes much longer. The welding window is wide open with 7005. Easton developed the alloy for thier baseball bats. The ends could be quickly welded and cooled before any harm to the hardness. Easton does recommend a stress relieve on bike frames though, but usually the Powdercoat oven bake takes care of that. That is why the motherload of Asian frames are painted.

I'm a bit scared to ask Kevin just in case he decides to twat me over the head with Pinky causing it to crack again...

Was going to organise a respray with my last guy, but found out he passed away just before Christmas in a cycling accident...

holy sh*t!!!

I know..it really took me by surprise...it was only a couple of years since I had pinky done, thought, I'll take it back to Ross as he did such a great job last time...When I first met him we chatted for like an hour about bikes and stuff before he even got around to asking me what colour I wanted on my bike, such a genuinely nice person....he'll be sadly missed....
