Cornwall Mountain Bike Club circa 1994/5/6?

There was a club featured in the first ever MTB magazine I bought - (think it was Mountain Biker International) called the Rock Zombies in Truro..they looked pretty mental in the feature!

Hi,

I never raced in the series but had loads of mates that did. The boys at the cycle centre Penzance are good friends of mine.
John Morse still rides when he can. mostly Audax but when an xc or enduro event comes down this way he has a go.
Ian Warren hasnt ridden for a while after a motorbike smash. Hes on the way back slowley. He is eyeing up a new carbon Trek road bike at the moment.
Jason Gidney Now rides down hill events across Britain and has even done a couple of euro events in the past.
There are others down here that still ride out in small groups. But as for any organised xc scene, 1998 was the last year. To my knowledge anyway. There was a local Dual event that ran a couple of years.
Cornwall is an overlooked area when it comes to Mountain Biking. We are a long way away from most of Britain and i think getting large enough numbers to race here may be a problem!
The loss of Newnam park Plymouth as a world cup venue hasnt helped grass roots cycling any either.

Cheers All,

al.

TSC ....... the kit hill race........ was that the one with the hill that was rediculously steep just before the end, the one you had to crawl up on all fours just to stop slipping back down again?
It was about half way around the lap, & I remember it being pretty nearly impossible to ride up, although I'm sure a few did manage it.

Cannot remember any racing by have a vague recollection of some dude riding down in the old tin mines in cornwall, a brace of ever ready lights on the front of very cut down bars i seem to think. Anyone else remember this or am I going crackers?

S
I remember that from an early MBUK, the guy was on a Diamond Back.

Cheers,

TSC.

nah i must be thinking of a diffrent race, i only raced for a couple of years and i was really young at the time, still in school, so the races tend to blur in to a hazy memory, allthough i couldnt say for sure.
just a quick tip for anyone here in cornwall, try out luxyillian valley in st austell, some really cool switchbacks, nice woodland riding. an

Used to love the CMBC series races back in the day, can't remember the names of the places though... or even where they were as I was too young to drive.
So never really paid attention where Jason was driving the team van, but coming from Torquay I felt like a dog getting out the boot of a car after being couped up for a long journey!
Great courses, really tough going! Used to do well in Juvenile/Junior cats...

Re: what happened to Cornwall MTB club race series

i was on the last committee of CMTB and used to run the kids races + race in vets.
I can recall race venues at St Kew, Looe, Colwith, Dunmere, St Ives, Launceston, Tehidy, there were generally 7 or 8 events per season.
toward the last few years of existence, the race series became a victim of its own success in that it peaked at 220+ sign ons at Tehidy.
As a completely voluntary set up, the amount of work was becoming excessive for the few that were prepared to help, but i recall one of our biggest concerns was that of insurance.
Down hill was starting to take off and members were calling for downhill events, but our insurance was always an issue in that we would never hold an event without it , but we really did not want to test how good it was. It was considered that the committee members might be personally responsible were the insurance cover not honored for some reason.
So regrettably we finally called it a day.

It was a tremendous race series with many fond memories for me and my family (the Kays) who would be involved all weekend from set up/sign on to packing up.

Still have my race bike - diamond back wcf carbon, + Amp B3 and Amp B5, and can often be seen riding them around Cardinham.
