Colnago Classic- Columbus Zona tubing- Help please

I am looking at buying an early 2000's Colnago Classic and noticed that it ismade with Columbus Zona tubing.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the ride quality of Zona tubing? Is it heavier than the Gilco?

Is the Zona such an entry level tubing that it would affect resale of the frame in the future?

That looks in rather good nick!

The Classic was Colnago's 'entry level' frame.
Zona is a perfectly respectable tubing. Apparently thicker walls in the thinnest sections than some, so perhaps a little heavier than top end steel tubing, but steel isn't the lightest material these days. Should give a reasonable amount of stiffness. I wouldn't worry too much about the type of steel tubing. If it fits you nicely, enjoy it.

As for later re-sale, you'll find there is always a demand for Colnagos. If you choose a bike you like to ride and that motivates you to get out on the road more fequently, that should outweigh a few pounds made/ lost over the time you own it.

Many thanks for your thoughts. It is clear that the owner has been meticulous in looking after the bike. Something I like to do, so I try to buy from people who are the same.

The bike weighs in at 21 pounds, which is what my Litespeed Teramo weighs, pretty good for a steel bike!

Currently trying to negotiate the sale and delivery. I will let everyone know how it goes.

Quick update. The tubing on the bike is actually Columbus Classic 25 Cr Mo 4, not Zona. Anyone know if this is the same as Zona, or what the ride quality is like?

Lovely looking Colnago you have there! The steel tubing from Colnago will be as good as it gets. My tubing is Gilco and the frame was bought in 97. I think i'm right in saying that the tubing you have may be an improvement on that? Either way the tubing will be high quality so don't get to hung up over it's quality.

Is the frame a Technos or Master?

I love that the look of the bike I just bought, as it looks like the late nineties classic Nago's- I think I will swap out the stem and bars to a more classic Cinelli set. What do you think?

Looking at the bike you would never guess it was an entry level frame such is the quality! Yes, i'm afraid the Gilco Technos/Master are very difficult to find now unless you would like to buy new from Colnago, you will need a cool £1700+

There's a guy in the forum who appears to be from America and he found one in a scrap yard and it's in unbelievable condition and he bought it of them for $17.00. Outrageous, how lucky is that!

I can't see what the bars are but the Colnago stem looks fine, however, a purist, traditionalist, would argue they should be nice and shiny. If you do decide to replace them then it may be a challenge to find Cinelli replacements.

Condor cycles in London may be able to help. They are worth a phone call.

My Colnago is in the gallery if you have five and would like to see the frame. It's on the second page easy to find as its the only Colnago there up to that point.

The seat post has been replaced by a nice shiny one

I saw your Master Olympic in the thread BT Ekallus. I was watching the same frame that he bought off EBay. Kicking myself that I did not bid! Yours is a lovely build, and I enjoyed looking at it.

I will let you know how I get on with this bike, and I will keep a close eye out for Nago s that come up for sale on the forum! Happy riding!

Good bike shop, i've never been there but i have made a few purchases over the phone and always had an excellent service.

Lucky you california, every time i see that place on the telly it's sun, blue sky and lots of nice looking ladies everywhere. Not fair.

We have had the coldest summer here in England for twenty years, bloody typical English summer, shite! I was out training the other evening and i had some of my winter gear on; rediculous.

Pleased you like my bike cost me a fortune and i'm still spending. I'm in the process of purchasing a Royce bottom bracket £200. Sure, let me know how you get on with the Colnago and good luck with the search and if you're racing over there be sure to raise that Union Jack nice and high!
