Colnago Classic- Columbus Zona tubing- Help please

Bike has arrived and looks great. Just starting to pull it together today.

Any advice if I want to get rid of the black ITM stem (and bars) and change to a more classic silver quill? I believe the forks are 1 inch thread less, so can I use a quill stem on thread less?

Fluffman,

I've just been looking through an old(ish) Colnago catalogue - and have seen this model and paint scheme ('D21B') in there - the catalogue is the 50th Anniv edition (the year the C50 was introduced), I think 2004.

Sadly, no mention of the tubing used. I've recently seen another Colnago frame (a Competition Classic), which has shaped Zona tubing, it is definitely a different model to this Classic.

Re-Stem - no, you can't use a quill stem on a threadless fork - choices are a) to find a threaded fork, b) get the current fork machined to threaded, or c) use an Ahead stem. If it were me I'd use what you have. There are some Ahead stems in silver, which would move towards a more classic look and would look really good. (I think Deda and Ritchey may do silver, others can perhaps help out with suggestions).

Looks good, I'm looking forward to a ride report,

David.

David, many thanks for this! I agree on keeping the quill handlebar combination in place, still would be nice to have some shiny bits up front!

I went for my first ride and was really impressed how lively the frame felt. Climbing was actually great despite a lot of steep hills and only having a standard double and 12 25 drivetrain. Took it to my LBS for a once over and much oohing and ahhhhhing ensued.

I will still try to switch over the drive train to a compact crankset-lots of hills where I live. Thanks for all of your help!
