Can any one tell me what I need to do to clean out old melted elastomer gunk from fork stanchions please?

Additionally am I OK to send a pair of black sanctions off to be re-anodised?

Cheers,

Lee.

Re:

Partly depends on what material the elasto were Lee.
I use a trial combination of washing up liquid, hot water & bottle brushes, scraping, rags/paper towels on a stick, etc. Then if the gunk is a bit tougher; acetone, cellulose thinners and brake cleaner[not all at once!!]

The stanchions will need to be stripped of the old ano and the re-anodised, it may very slightly reduce the diameter leading to a bit of bearing play possibly, or maybe increase the diameter?? Make sure the stanchions are stripped bare of any parts.

Cheers
Tim :D

Hiya Tim.... these are Manitou 3 & 4 elastomers.... Will get some elbow grease going if it's that straight forward. Was imagining a chemistry experiment with various solvents!

Well, you could always go down the sulphuric acid/hydrochloric acid route, just for fun
