Claud Butler-Holdsworth frame numbers 1959-1976

I agree with Dave, looks like a 1963 Classique with a 4D Holdworth number similar to increasing number of Classique frames in data base that have similar Holdsworth serials . Somewhat of a guess, but likely built at Holdworthy factory to Classique specs - thus explaining Holdsworth 4D serial.

I have to say that looks like a Holdsworth 4D number from 1963. Its an odd bunch of numbers and does already include a number of CB Classique's. Initially this group was thought to be a change of numbering in the early 60's for a couple of years before they resumed the 5D numbers again. There clearly was a break in the 5D numbers, but this 4D group seems to last longer than the gap and also include CB frames. All a bit odd, but this one in in good company in that group. Interestingly the first Classique frame in the group is 0159 from 62 and has cable guides on the top of the top tube. I thought this was a modification until I looked at the cat. I guess this frame is a early proto build and from 63 they had std. side mounted guides as yours has, but the catalog pics never got updated. If you go to the frame number page on the history site you can access the database and have a look for yourself.
Thanks, that's interesting. For an entirely spurious reason 1963 would be perfect - it's the year I was born!

Something about the paint job/graphics of @Tabbyiab 's Classique has been niggling me so I've gone back through the catalogues and found that the flamboyant turquoise with red, white and black panels isn't advertised as an option till 1965.

Re: @Tabbyiab's CB Classique 2742 and dating to c.1963 in Holdsworthy 4D prediction system :
- Not seeing an oiler on bottom of BB suggests to me that 2742 has an oiler on top of BB? This points to a build prior to 1965 as this oiler postion change is a consistent finding with Holdworthy frames.
- @dwscrimshaw's Holdsworth prediction table and the unexplained switch (originally described by Kilgariff) from the longstanding sequential numbering system sometime in 1962 to a "4D" system and then back again to original system by early 1965 is ill-defined and a rough guide only. Not sure the 2 systems co-existed during this period as Dave's prediction table describes.
 
Thanks, I have to say I started by assuming the two systems didn't coexist and it was a clean switch over and back again. But, nothing ever seems to be that simple and I guess the honest answer is, we will never really know. I think it would be fair to assume it was a fairly clean switch over to the 4D system as we have some good documented frame numbers for late 1961 along with the batch of numbers issued to the shop. But the fact that we have 4D numbers up in the 6000's when factory production (for Holdsworth models) was around 1500/yr is a bit problematic. Added to this we have some CB numbers in there too and far fewer high numbers than lower numbers.

We do have a couple of documented 5D numbers for 1963 on wards, a Golden Hurricane from 64 and CBGuys very good number for 65. So I have allocated 1500 4D numbers for 1962 and reintroduced the 5D in 1963. This then has the rest of the known 4D running out at 1500/yr and a constant rise in 5D numbers over the period with the brake for one year. We do have problems with 4D numbers as there are an number of these; we have the 60's group, the 70's and it would seem a few from the shop too along with the original 5D numbers from the 40's. As I am sure you can appreciate here are distinct model differences in these groups. The 4D numbers did originally, and still do, include numbers we could not place so there is still an element of doubt here. It does look like the 60 group continued to be used after the change back to 5D for some reason and are probably not main stream factory production. These could be contract build for other companies or shops, built off site etc.

We do have a capacity issue in early 60's with the prediction as we have main stream factory production on 5D Holdsworths and CB's combined which is in excess of 1500/yr; that is to be expected. But I have then allocated 1500/yr 4D numbers in the early 60's too which can't really work unless the Holdsworth 5D numbers are low (as they seem to be), but if you allocated less the 4D group lasts longer, so we don't really know what the full production of frames was at this time and how it was split.

The problem with a prediction is that it is based on some known points and then a roughly linier or at least consistent rise in the numbers. Consequently the only thing we can be sure of is that it is a prediction and not reality, i.e. not 100% accurate. It is as you say a guide that is more accurate around the known points and less so else where. This is why I have included the Red, Yellow Green numbers to indicate quality of the data. The black numbers are just fitted in where I think they should go. Bit of a long explanation and if other have any more in site I would be pleased to hear it and put it along side what we have so far.
 
Had my Claud Butler Courier since 1959 Frame No 4117 Still original brakes,handlebars, but re constructed early 80's as was deterioating and just on with it again now trying to re construct. Frame still seems solid but obvious a couple of re-paints from original state. Hoping to have it up and running again soon (2022) 1st Photo after 1980's re-build 2nd photo its current state.

Yes could well be. Those eyes for the cables are also seen on Shop Built Holdsworths so could have been a modification at some point. These is also a group of Holdsworth numbers using 4 digits from the early sixties when they made a brief break from the traditional 5 Digit numbers of the time. I have seen theses eyes on those too, some CB's got these numbers, if it is from this group it would be ~1961. (4 Digits were also used in the 70's but this frame looks earlier than that). I think you are going to have to check out the frame features and angels more closely and look t the models available at that time from Holdsworth/CB.

Do you know if Holdsworth also used this type of rear dropout.
I've got some headbadges to match up to frames, so I'll also see how the holes on the headtube match up.
 
They could well have done, that is an unbranded basic drop out. The head badge holes would also be common between CB and Holdsworth I think.
