Classic Raleigh ??? Identification

Re:

Well, I'm officially mad.

I went and bought a tin of Nitromors and made a start stripping the paint.

Re:

The first application didn't do much at all, but I was being stingy with the stuff as it costs a bomb!

Today I applied another thick coat all over and this really did the business. It was blistering the paint all over within 30 minutes.

After 40 minutes I applied another thin coat over the existing stuff as it was drying out. Working it into the blistered paint.

Another 30 minutes down the line and I was fed up with all the waiting around. I took my scraper and gave the frame a good scraping. The paint was literally falling off the frame.

Made a start with the sanding but had to go get the kids from school.

Some more pics of where we're at now...

Re:

The frame is now clean.

What grade of wet n dry paper should I go down to on the bare metal before applying my first primer coat?

Is it necessary to carry out this Acid wash before the primer goes on?

To be honest it looks like a thing of beauty now its free from all that nasty paint :D

Some more pictures if you guys are interested.....

Re:

Hi buck fast, that has come up great. I am doing a similar project but being the masochist I am, I hand sanded mine to bare metal! There was some logic in that mine has chrome stays and I didn't know if nitromors would damage chrome.

I am a couple of stages ahead. I used 80 grit to give a good key for the etch primer. Then laid on as many coates as reasonable whilst keeping the lug definition (too heavy with the paint depth and it will look 'resprayed'. After primer had dried ( I left mine a week) used 800and 1200 grit finally with 2000 grit before starting with top coats. Top coats on and then sanded using very fine grade between coats.

I am sure there are others more qualified than me though..

I am sure the drop out will be fine

(Reminds me I must update my thread on my project).

The 'blurb' from Halfords website on this product says:

"Ideal for use on galvanised steel & aluminium"

Re:

Thank you all for the advice.

Etch primer it is then. I'm going to give the frame one more light sanding before any paint though, not really happy with the bottom bracket area yet.

Having said all that, it'll have to wait until payday now - funds are thinning rapidly :(

Will keep you all updated when things progress.

Cheers,
Geoff.
