Being asked about track cycling result's being due to marginal gains:

"I think personally mountain biking is where marginal gains started. They are obsessed with their equipment, suspension, large wheels, particularly weight. Power to weight is everything in mountain biking. Frames that we've seen here arriving without paint to save literally 60 or 70 grams."

Being asked about the previous day when he said red paint was the heaviest :

"I do suffer from terminal sarcasm I'm afraid. No, red paint is not heavier, though yellow is lighter."

That's us lot he's talking about back in the early 90's when we were getting bikes as light as we could!

A bit rich coming from a man who made his name on the track and in road time trials. Disciplines where the authorities have made a minimum weight rule that bikes aren't allowed to be below.

I thought the same. He didn't go on to say that things went too far, and started to break.

But what a good race.

you got a road commentator too ? here in Portugal we had the same thing, there's a ton of posts on the network facebook page regarding that. It was hideous, he didnt even noticed that the italian guy was going on the final lap without a saddle. Not to mention that they ended the broadcast seconds before the PT rider crossed the line in 23rd to transmit the warmup of mens basketball final... sad..

I only watched the beginning and end as its been a busy day. How did he loose the seatpost and saddle? Hats off to him though.

Boardman just talks bollox. He would get on well with 3 people on here.

I don't see anything wrong with this, he's one of those who are/were at the top of his game where everything will make a difference wether it's mechanically or mentally

Look at the f1 drivers who think a 1,000th of a second is a big difference..plus he does also seem to have a sense of humour

I thought the cycling commentators did a good job on the whole. Hugh Porter was let down by technology and was therefore unable to give split times in the road race, but other than that, not bad at all.

Boardman is a legend! An unemployed scouse carpenter who won the 4000m pursuit, had a road career, wore yellow and broke the hour record more than once, what more do you want?

It's only at that level where saving 100g is going to make any real difference. I am still riding my heavy, over engineered bike from 1990 so lighter isn't always better!
