Seller says it's shipping damage, checked over before dispatch etc. I say it's been over tightened and cracked it.

What say you?

Definitely not shipping damage - two reasons, 1 I'm not sure that is possible by shipping!, 2 No impact or damage mark at either end of the crack.

Agree with you that it is damage due to overtightening. Either not checked well enough or trying to pull a fast one.

How was it packaged and who delivered it?

Packaged okay, arm wrapped individually, RH with rings. Rings had poked through slightly, but it's a chainset after all. Successfully delivered by Evri!

I'm open with the seller, these things happen I suppose - especially if you're not familiar with old bike components. I'm awaiting thier reply.

Just looks like ordinary cracking from riding, happens from time to time. Probs been cracked for long

I suspect its fatigue, not overtightening, which would likely leave distortion around the taper.

It's about the first Shimano crank I've seen with fatigue - it shows how good their engineering design is.

Amen to that, even their lowest end cranksets are apocalypse proof

The only way that’s shipping damage is if someone put the ship on it!
EBay purchase? Doesn’t matter if the seller disagrees just return it.
If that was my sale, I’d take it back and not risk negative feedback
