Changing cassette

For reference, these are Campagnolo hubs. Silver from circa 2001 and Black from 2007. These have the step spline shown at the 12 o'clock position on the freehub which yours doesn't have which is maybe why your cassette doesn't fit. It also seems unusual that you say the wheels were new in 2005 when the spline pattern on yours is different from the standard Campagnolo pattern of the same age.

The stepped spline (at 12 o'clock) in my picture looks to be at about 4 o'clock in the OP's picture.
 
I seem to have an idea that there was an early version of the 9 speed freehub before Campagnolo moved to the newer version? I could be completely wrong though...
 
Bike shops set appointments 6 weeks ahead to look at something? Is that really how it works nowadays (sorry haven't been to a bike shop in years)
