Changing big chainring, advice needed!

If you're fitting a new chain anyway, just make sure that it is long enough to run big/big (so the new 53t ring and the biggest sprocket) without over-stretching the rear mech. Generally wrap the chain around these two - but not through the mech - and add a link or two for leeway once the mechs included. Bit like Rob already said...

If you don't leave big/big as a possibility, when you do it by accident (and you will!) you'll rip your rear mech off...

The front mech cage should pass roughly a mil above the biggest ring and parallel to it. That said, I sometimes kick the tail of the cage out everso slightly to help stop it rubbing in the small/small gears you admit to liking! ;) Personally my bad habit is the opposite as bigger rings feel like they turn nicer - I could argue this is to do with chain overlap, more contact area and less acute wrapping angles ... but it's 99% in my head I'm sure!

Hope that helps :)

cheers for all the help guys!

Did this job the other evening, stripped down crank, cleaned and refitted small chainring/new Royce chainring and new chain (KMC of course)

I didn't end up moving the front dérailleur as it looked pretty good once the new chainring was on, I've got a mil or so between the teeth and the cage, what do you guys think, does it look OK?

Hello,

The recommendation for the distance between the large chainring and the outer plate of the cage of the front derailleur is 1-3 mm. I prefer the closest, the 1 mm, even closer when it is possible.
So, if the derailleur works well and the distance not more than 3 mm, then you have no reason to change the position of the mech.

Great cheers guys, strange but by eye the cage looks closer to the teeth than it does in the pics lol, I may look at lowering it slightly, but it's working fine and is certainly within spec going by what's been said so perhaps I'd better leave it.

One thing I did do after much reading is adjust the stops, as the cage outer could catch the crank arm slightly if the shifter was moved right back and was allowing a little too much movement the other way, almost enough to chuck the chain onto the BB bracket, so I used Sheldons guide and adjusted accordingly. All good and less trimming needed now which is a bonus.

And cheers Pedro! Needs Royce crank arms though...

get this set up :)

Lol he's on the small chainring though, needs to man up ;-) (never this this set up with a double chainring and derailleur before though, that's insane!)

To be fair it's the above sort of set up that got me into Royce, as per the Donhou bike on the Rapha video, on which Royce supplied the crank and chainring, I have to say I hadn't heard of Royce before this!!

I'd absolutely love to have a go on a bike like this, I'd have thought hitting the sweet spot of a 100 plus tooth chainring is an awesome feeling! Though I think I'll stick to 53...
