that is what sheldon brown states, but I never trusted that to be right. Check if you have the problem with the crank loose

I wound out the drive side bb cup by 5mm and it still caught the pins....

I would try spacers on the outer rings as MTT has said, have you tried another chain ?

yeah tried it with an xtr 10 speed chain and still caught...

...having just put the granny ring on the space between the granny and the middle is far greater than the middle and the outer (see pic)

space between granny and middle around 2.5mm larger....

There's your answer then. You need some spacers on either the middle or big ring.

I'd be tempted to try the middle ring first.

Yeah but the question is still why? When others don't have this problem? And what should the spacing between rings be?

From my experience XT chainrings don't require spacers on the middle rings, anything below seem to have the gold spacers, Most of your stuff Doug is XT isn't it ;)

My guess would be that there were spacers originally which have gone astray or one of the rings isn' original?
