I used Nokon at great expense and didn't really notice a vast difference.

Looks like marketing bollocks to me! Having been in the bike trade for over 30 years, and seen, and fitted, and used nearly every product on the market over this time, I would stick to some regular cables, Shimano being my preferred brand, as they will be almost certainly 99% as good, while being affordable and last as long!

Those exact ceramic beads that fit together have been used to insulate wires on heating elements for at least 20 years!
