Caught By The Fuzz

Re: disregarding...

Hi Pip, hope you are keeping well and beasting the challenges, as they present themselves fella.

I've had some experience of the big Ca recently and can only offer my thoughts, especially during the current crisis.

On topic, I live a literal stone's throw, from one of our "7 stanes" trail centre routes, North of the Border. On Monday, we had more people show up, in cars, family in tow, bikes, parking on farmland, dogs off leads, etc, than a "normal" pre lockdown Sunday. This, despite the police erecting  road closed signs at every relevant access.

I have reported all occurrences to the Police, local CC and to date, no-one has been fined or even "educated" that I've witnessed and I've been here, staying the f_*k home.

I have a lot to say on the matter, but am chiefly interested in trying to defend the couple, in their late eighties, still farming next door to me, the 90 year old and the local shopkeepers who live past them Elizabeth, of the latter is also battling Ca. We are on a dead end road, the mountain bike trail head is in the town, so there is no reason for traffic related, to come here, even if the trails and car parks weren't officially closed and the non essential travel ban were in place, etc. Lads have posted their exploits on Strava, who've travelled across county to get here, just to ride the trails which are officially "closed".

Starting to despair.

Re:

we have had the police in the dale and there has been a bit of a do with some riders following the tour de yorkshire trail. Some of the village shops now refuse to serve non residents. There is a good reason for this.A lot of the older people can neither use the internet for shopping and some do not have transport so if the local store runs out of something then they have problems. The refusal to serve is to protect supplies to them.It would appear a bunch of riders from Bradford did not see it that way so there were words. if you are going out into the villages then take your own food and dont expect to be wellcomed if you block the high street. We dont stop in any of the villages we ride through. When its time for a sarnie then we find a field gate to lean on.It has to be said that some riders are now giving this sport a very bad name and that is sad as most are decent thoughtfull folk.

The long arm of the law is pretty short here in North Wales. The last copper I saw on my bike while cycling down a local lane he waved and I waved back. They are pretty decent sorts around here. But people inc myself don't tend to take the piss either.

Second homers and tourists not particularly welcome by the locals at the moment though.

I suppose they need something to do now there are less cars on the road.

Actually something I've noticed. Watched tv from across the world on this and about every country has tv pics.
All the police all over are wearing masks, but in the UK this doesn't appear to be the case.
The infection can be spread according to the WHO website from coughing, sneezing or speaking, with the latter not often discussed or mentioned for the most part.

I would think having someone stand and talk directly at you is as bad as the same sneezing or coughing directly at you, albeit from a distance, 2m is too exacting a distance to be wholly reliable, and the tv pics I've seen put the police in some cases standing closer than that.

At the very least they should be wearing marks while addressing people or speaking to them.

Yes i have noticed this, if i were to be approached i would point this out to them. I suppose in some instances they do need to get close but should at least join in.

As a side note, the virus has appeared in remote tribes and villages around the world where im sure people have not travelled to and coughed on anyone, which kind of brings the whole thing into dispute, but hey, you have to believe the tv/goverments right, they are there to help us surely!?

After 14yrs of stopping the public trying to kill themselves and each other, all I have to say is we aren’t here to make revenue, would like everyone to get through this safely and wish we all had the protective kit even the NHS still have to cry out for.
Only today have my team been given more than paper masks and our usual gloves.

Wish I had the choice to stay at home except for a walk with the dog or essential shopping. Lucky in someways to be working and be able to get out but if I get ill and make my young family ill it may (as we really cannot say who may die) be me that unintentionally does that to them. This is exactly why social distancing and potentially exposing others is so very important.

In regards to over zealous Police, you get idiots in every job but unfortunately more of the public are taking our time right now than you’d believe. Crime as a whole has of course decreased but domestics and mental health are up hugely, that’s what they will be dealing with if you haven’t seen any.

Take care all, keep looking out for the more vulnerable and I hope to see you on the other side safe and well with lots of retro projects completed ;)

Re:

To the original question, I was fined £60 for riding on the pavement in Lewisham back in 2011. Lame on all counts, not least me; I should have skrrrrted off and left the po-po to waste their time on something more important. (Of course I should have just followed the Highway Code).

Especially since this was 2 days after the riots. Yes, that's right. Where there'd been no police in the days running up to the trouble and not that much when it was kicking off, the days afterwards they were everywhere

So, wrong time, wrong place on the central "roundabout" where I used to hop on a tiny stretch to cut it out (note I don't do this anymore - I learned the error of my ways guv'nor - plus I don't go this way anymore), 2 officers jumped out in front of me, and 2 behind.

4 officers to stop a cyclist; what a great use of our resources and looking back I was lucky they didn't throw more at me when I started asking them if they thought this was the sort of policing they'd imagined they'd be doing in London, especially given what had happened 2 days prior.
