I worked in a Raleigh 5* Dealer in the 70's and had to PDI the bikes......Carlton were always screwed together better than Raleigh, the wheels were generally round and the frames didn't need much touching up and extra decals fitting over the scrapes.
Quality control in the 70's were non existant especially on the Grifter
We used to sell cheap and cheerful bikes (Steyer-Daimler-Puch and Peugeot) and they *were* made out of gas pipes LOL
I'm trying to remember the name of the equivalent painted frame similar to the all chrome Cobra....
