It's all coming together nicely Spokesmann - another fine Carlton will soon be turning heads in Plymouth.

Mark.

Thanks, yes, with a few battle scars...

Re: Carlton Constellation/Catalina chrome restoration

Been working on wheels, god I hate working on wheels. Pics soon!

Re:

Been a bit quiet on this build recently due to other commitments and also purely by the fact that pictures of bits being polished 'aint that interesting.

Anyway I can now report I have repacked the steering head and refitted as well as done a good deal of work on the rear wheel and the lovely Resilion hubs. The front wheel may need a visit to the LBS for a little more truing. Both are responding to a mixture of elbow grease and autosol. Sadly I have found the brazed on gear lever fitting has a stripped thread so I might have to use a band on boss instead. The bike is slowly coming together but still needs a lot of TLC applied to the frame - Im still removing grease and sticky deposits from mounds of insulating tape applied to make it look better by the previous owner/s.

Here are some pictures of my efforts thus far.

A big spanner always helps...

The GB hiduminium steerer is looking better...

Cleaned the hoods with a mixture of water and Multi surface cleaner with a cloth and brush. Ive swopped them around so the previous scratched out sides now face inwards...

These have been degreased, re-oiled and polished...

I have some red anodised Campag toe clips for these, to keep the red theme going!

I love these old hubs...

They used to be on my 1970 mauve Corsa but were so badly shot I had to scrap them. Shows the Carlton were still using this bits over a long period.

Rear wheel nearly completed. The Dunlop rims just need a final polish now.

Red is my overall colour/theme. Should be pretty eye catching I hope!

Re: Carlton Constellation/Catalina chrome restoration

Great to see the evolution of this. Really like those hubs and that stem.

Re: Carlton Constellation/Catalina chrome restoration

Dropped one wheel in and cut new cables to size for front and rear brakes. Loosely put in the gear change cable too. I'll need to adapt the red anodised Campag toe clips for fit, but they were just too good to miss.
Started to apply some decals to frame where acrylichrome paint meets the chrome. Helps cover the badly worn paint at these junctures.

First outing tomorrow ?

Sadly no, still a lot to maybe in a couple of weeks.

Re: Carlton Constellation/Catalina chrome restoration

I have now loosely built up the machine, to see how it looks. Still brakes, gears etc to hook up and adjust. Fit new chain and adjust, sort mudguards... the list goes on. The frame decals (original ones) will have to be carefully scraped off for the news ones to go on, sadly they had too many scrapes and knocks. The red bar tape, pump and toe clips will contribute to the overall impact. Overall the machine will have a fair amount of 'patina' of pre-loved scratch and wear though. I think we call it character!

Conditions are a little cramped in my workshop...

White ribbed cables are being used with new inners...

The hubs have come up a treat, the Dunlop rims aren't too bad either...
