Can you use a 8 speed mech on a 7 speed cassette/sti

Building a bits of this and that bike,

Have a 7 speed shimano cassette and 7 speed sora sti's, can I use an 8 speed (or even 10) rear mech ?

indexing wise, yes will work

the 8 speed & up mechs might have a narrower jockey cage leading to chainrub on the cage (noisy rather than misfunctions). I use the word MIGHT - it might not have. Easily solved with buying a narrower (say 9 speed) chain

7 and 8 speed used the same chains.

I do use a 8 vit cassette with an old school 7 vit Shimano R100 SIS shifter on the down tube. No trouble at all. Even a 10 can be used, but in that case I have to put the SIS function down.
