CAN WE MAKE STANDARD DECORUM TO CHECK THE WTD ADS FIRST?

..so i was bored, and i spend too much time on here

sorry if im off the mark, but i presume your post is in relation to the wanted ad for the XTR post!? the one you last posted on over 3 years ago, and which was replied to later the same day, which today you revisited to find the reply you had missed.

You are off the mark, but never mind... it was a valiant effort.

Are you reading through all my old posts now Poirot?

Please don’t confuse what I’m saying. I log on and click “new posts” so I see any wanted adverts and would respond if I had anything. I’d also look if it’s a recent post. But to look back over 4-5 years like the OP mentioned is absurd.

Totally agree with this, it is up to the person looking to bump the subject regularly to keep it current, as well as acknowledging when the parts have been found in the title, I get fed up looking at Wanted ads just to find they have found what they want already

I absolutely do exactly that. I agree. For me, that's just simple manners...

Indeed, I find that if I am stupid enough to update/edit my WTD's to SORTED too many times at the same time, over zealous mod's delete posts as I have too many "fresh ones", taking me back to square one for the bits that I actually want!

It's an interesting and inevitably divisive point. I think we have all felt the pain of missing out, so don't feel alone in that! It's a Retrobike 'if only' thing...

One thought occurs to me, which is, if sellers see 'needy' wanters, then it's hard to imagine the price is going to be tempered by 'market forces'.

On another related topic, being able to sell on here for similar technical reasons (traffic/searching) is forcing my current shed sale onto the dreaded FB. I'm wracked with guilt about this in many ways, believing as the OP does, that we're part of a community and that our sales are part of it - in terms of content and keeping it amongst ourselves. Guilt was tempered somewhat when most of my buyers are RBers hiding in the undergrowth! I still have items for sale here that have been on 5 years + - yet the same items crop up on Ebay and are brought to our attention here as though they have just arrived from Mars!

Thank you MrKawasaki - I thought I was completely alone on this one. It seems to have gone down like a lead balloon, with the majority clearly disagreeing and maintaining the "I'll sell first, and it's upto you to be on here to acquire it within minutes of it going live" position.

For me, this is just very poor, and not what the community is about.

Shaking things up a bit - I would say that the Road section is way, way more community minded than the MTB section in my experience. I am far, far more likely to get a response from a Road WTD ad, than an MTB WTD ad. Hmmm....

It's very, very poor to deliberately misrepresent what I actually said to bolster your non-community spirited point.

I have threads which are 4-5 years old, and get bumped from time to time, to bring them back to the front page, and they just get longer and longer - some people on here will know how long I've been looking for a Syncros Powerlite steerer for example. The POINT was that some people have been looking for some parts for YEARS.

I didn’t misrepresent anything. You never mentioned bumping threads back to top. You simply said 4-5 years you’d been looking. If your post isn’t in first couple of pages then very few people seem to want to go any further looking.

To be honest it strikes me of a little sour grapes from your part. If these rare parts come up from time to time then with enough time , effort and money you would have them in your possession. That’s half the fun of retro bikes. Finding the bits , building , riding once and then starting a new build .....

And how do you know the person who buys them instead of you hasn’t been looking longer? If there’s more than 1 wanted advert how does the seller pick? The oldest? How far do you go back? Is that poster even still active ? Too many variables and it’s confusing a easy process

Edited to add - I would also like to point out that the members who you say are on here all the time (which your posts sound like you resent a little ) are the ones who keep the community alive and the forum too. Without those people it will slowly die as people logging on once a month won’t keep it going. These people in my eyes are the ones who totally deserve to get a rare item just as much as you.

If you really 'need' something then, in my experience, you either need to A) stump up the cash and pay for it (perhaps exceeding the amount you are expecting), B) wait it out for that once in a lifetime bargain by keeping a careful eye on the usual places (here included) or C) compromise. I too will scan the wanted ads for things I have spare or am selling before listing an item, but the reply rate is usually low and experience tells me that even if you offer someone the thing they want, but perhaps is slightly too expensive/new/marginally different and they turn down that offer you are reluctant to bother trying to help again.
