Campagnolo 8-speed hub for a 7-speed SIS Shimano. How to...

Hi Guys,

There is a wheelset for sale I am interested in. The hubs are Campagnolo with an 8-speed Campy cassette.

My bike (a late 1980's Bianchi Specialissima) is equipped with a 7-speed Shimano SIS 105 down tube shifters and mechanism and with a freehub Uniglide rather than a cassette. I would like to swap the wheels, but not sure how to make things compatible. If I get an 8-speed Campagnolo down tube shifter, will the 105 rear mech be compatible?

If you ignore the indexing it should be fine. Have a look at Sheldon Brown , try "cassettes" then spacings crib sheet.

Alternatively you could try to find a Campagnolo wheelset with a 7sp cassette freehub.

Hi Guys,

An update on the subject and one more question...

I just bought a new wheelset for the bike with the 7400-series Shimano Dura Ace hubs (are they good by the way?). I was told that the freehub body has external and internal threads for the cassette fitting and there is an old 8-speed shimano DA cassette at present on it (I assume it is the Hyperglide vesion).

The question I have - will my current rear derailleur be compatible with the cassette (currently 7-speed freewheel). I believe I need a new 8-speed shifter?
Other solution would be to install a 9-speed cassette, but then again, I would need to get a shifter to match. Is my thinking right?

Shimano and Campagnolo 7 speed spacing is the same and I have used a 7 speed Shimano HG cassette with Campagnolo 7 speed Syncro indexing very successfully all winter. If you can get a 7 speed Campy cassette and a spacer to fit onto your 8 speed hub then you ought to be able to index properly with the current Shimano 105 rear derailleur that you already have.

Or by reading the CTC Shimergo article if Campy 7 speed, Shimano 7 speed and Campy 8 speed are all 5mm spacing then you should be able to set your derailleur to operate on 7 of the 8 sprockets on the Campy cassette that comes with your wheels. So either choose the top 7 or the bottom 7...tell your friends you've got a spare sprocket!

Yes, you'll need an 8 speed shifter or fit a 7 speed cassette on the 8 speed freehub.
