Camelbaks are such a pain but oh so great as well.

Remember being completely embarrassed by a bunch of friends walking through a busy country pub at lunchtime with freshly filled bladders from the toilets and a room full of asonished and revolted diners seeing sweaty men walk past them carrying what looked like colostomy bags with yellowy liquid dripping out of them.

Not pleasant.

They are however a very good impact cushion that when full can protect the spine somewhat on impact (as long as the rogue 5mm allen key doesn't get you round the side!).

I bought a 1st gen when they came out, and still use it. Sure, I'd like to get a new one with the padded straps etc. I did have to replace the bladder though, the mouthpiece retainer just popped off one day whilst riding the Downs.

Wet and dehydrated, not a good look!

Camelbak for me on the road too. I am not going to mount a heavy cage and an ugly plastic canister with heavy liquid H2O to my lightweight retro roadbike

I’ve never used a Camel Back type thing, I've only had a bottles. I've wondered about them but never committed, They seam a bit pricey if you end up finding them not quite the thing. My concerns are over heating, with that extra packaging on your back and not being able to douse oneself when getting hot.

I might have a go someday but not yet I think.

I use a bottle for short rides and races where there's a transition. For adventure races where you could be running / biking / rafting it's a camelback all the way.

Also know to take a bottle on a ride, with a camelback pack without the bladder, just to carry map, tools, food etc.

Great idea though. Another one I wish I'd thought of ... but I wouldn't have thought of charging so much for them!!

I always use a Camelbak - water bottles always seemed to fall out on downhills...

I used to freeze my empty camelbak bladder to keep the mildew away and then defrost it under a hot tap before using it. One day I thought I'd try microwaving it as it might be quicker... but it melted...
