You are saying 70 odd gigs are iTunes, so you can just let iTunes move all that to a folder on an external drive.

Do you only have the one ~150Gb hard drive in your PC, or do you have a larger hard drive partitioned?

If you have just a single ~150Gb hard drive, that's small for a hard drive these days and ~£50 will buy you a 1TB drive and ~£70 will buy a 2TB drive and you can use utilities to copy your old files to a new drive so that you don't have to re-install Windows and all your software and it will be a long time before you fill up 1 or 2 TB.

external is 698 Gb with 401 Gb left, so will pester wife to sort asap cheers all ....

Our Music, Photos and Videos live on a NAS which means 3TB of space dedicated to just storage of media, the important stuff gets backed up to a second NAS on a weekly basis and I copy it to an external USB every 6 months and leave that at my folks.
I may be a bit paranoid

3TB? Yeah, at that point you can still do dual backups. Once you get past 10TB it becomes too expensive.
