tomorrow I will be picking up my first carbon frame mountain bike (welcome to the 21st century!) and just want to know how to check the frame out.
it is second hand.

obvious stuff is look out for chain gouges, signs of repair, unusual stickers covering repairs  plus cracks around the major frame members - head tube/down tube/top tube/seast tube.

Any other pointers and advice most welcome :)

(it's like Christmas come early :):):) )

Mine has some laquer flaking off - thought no problem & then you realise how difficult it could be to get the laquer off & redo it.

whatcha buying ?

check for damage and cracking usually around the seat post area and the b/b
but go over it all in depth ,as craiga says paint seems to flake off carbon
quite easily ,my carbon zaskar flakes at the dropouts
get a good testride on it , i bought mine on lust alone ,but its taken
me a while to get to like it ,and i still have the opinion that an ali zaskar
is slightly better

And...did you managed to do it? How?

Carbon has silicone in it which is why it's difficult to paint. Probably explains why it flakes off after a while.

I think the easiest option is to flat it back and paint over the existing laquer.

No, it's still work in progress

Some laquer is flaking off my scott endorphin,I have flatted it back carefully and covered it in copter tape in the relevant area,it gives a nice glossy finish and is very hard wearing and waterproof as well

yeah, more or less spotless ... bit of mud on the underside between the cable/hose runs that has been washed away; seems like it has had hardly any use jusging from the amont of wear or lack of wear on the discs - seller said he may have used it 10 times .

unfortunately is is about as anti-retro bike as you can get, 27 speed, disc brakes, full suspension, carbon frame etc. and tis whacky oversize wheel spindle QR release that aren't so quick thingies.

shame the brakes take DOT fluid though :(

now waiting for so,e dry weather to take it through its paces.
