Should stick to top end shimano or Hope. Used both and never had a problem since 1999
Not so much the Hopes but my 4 pot XT Shimanos are the very definition of set and forget.

Re:

Was having chats with other a few weeks back and the trickle down to the current Deore means they are damn nice now.

Me not got or had a bike with discs
The way it should be.

once there set up right even acera hydros are powerfull ive got older xtrs too theres not much between them in terms of braking power

the aceras have heavy large steel bolts an steel levers which adds extra weight
but the plain black levers are nicer looking then deores
no big logos just small shimano decal on them
which suits the xt shifter under it (1x9 gearing)
same goes for the calipers an they all match the fc-m442 crank

I would say the xtr old or no that alcera could not touch the performance period. end of. sorry to disagree slightly old chap
I had original saints which are pretty much XTR and they impressed me greatly. The down side of shimano is non repairable. The start to leak and you bin them and the seals can leak a little in winter and UK and Scottish winters can be damn cold. As such i wouldnt invest in shimano again.
That makes them considerably more expensive than Hope. Just a matter of time.
Anyway :D Saints, XT (as previously mentioned  ) and XTR are totally misleading . It doesnt look much but packs a wollop

Aren't Hopes the same as the ones fitted to Giants around 2007/9 ?

Those are a copy of C2's though i couldnt speak much of their power or feel as i havent tried Giants version but given they dont go for high on ebay i guess that could be a sign.

Ha, I do love my old Hopes. They're a bit like a British sports car, they leave a bit of fluid in the driveway and can let you down at the most inopportune moments but when they are working well you wouldn't want anything else.

My Shimanos are like a Japanese car, they just work all the time but I never look at them and go "phwooar" like I do the Hopes.

dyna i can only go on how they feel
modern bottom end shimanos and xtr960 with same rotor sizes
sure you would notice a bit if you jumped off your xtr braked bike an jumped on to the cheaper 1s
right after but if you get up in the morning an get stright on your cheapies bike
i hardly notice the diffrence tbh
