A non-period, idiosyncratic CX build for daily Southern California riding!

An ex-racer’s ex-race whip. Came to me with a stretched rear (135) and crimped stays to accommodate a road crank and 700/42s front and rear.

Suntour XC Pro/Dura Ace 7700/XTR M952 mashup 2x drivetrain stolen from the smaller, orange one I had.

The wide, Riv-designed Nitto Bullmoose went on there for vibes and comfort, along with whatever the parts bin had that I could throw at it!

Perfect for about 90% of my riding out here.

Hi this is my Bontrager Race.
Frame bought in November 1996.
From Julie's cycles in Leicester.
It is one of the last with geometry
Adjusted for suspension forks.
I paid £400 which was cheep at the time.
It is in the original blue metallic paint.
But I foolishly removed the top sticker
When it got tatty.
This is a build that has evolved over the years and is not period correct throughout.
But is a very functional steed IMO.
Marzocchi air oil MX comp 1" threadless
Chris King soto voce headset.
Shimano LX & XT groupset.
Mis-match rims atec and Fir Impess
As the rear impress split years back
and I couldn't find another IMG_20231226_133325.webp
Front brake hope MM 4
Rear brake XTR v type, parallel action. IMG_20231226_133243.webp IMG_20231226_133205.webp IMG_20231226_133309.webp IMG_20231226_133224.webp
Anyway you can judge for yourself from the pics.

Azonic riser bar 50mm is contemporary late 90's
Ritchey Wcs stem and bar ends a bit later but look period. Tyres are maxis cross mark which I think suit a retro build. Seat post is USE suspension alien. 25mm Diameter with long shim to 26.8mm. Seat a cheep copy flite alike. Pedals are nukeproof Proton alloy silver.
QR are sun ringle. Seat binder is Ringle Ti as the back is machined out.

My son helped me finished the Ti Lite build this afternoon with XTR group set. It turned out nicely. Now, I have two bonty bikes - 90 race lite and 97 Ti lite.
