Brake Hoods Renovation

Is there something one can apply to brake hoods of a certain vintage to slow their gradual deterioration ? Feed them in the same way as one can leather.

Re:

Old hoods contain silicone oil which eventually comes out of them as you wash them and grab them also
they start to dry up and there's not much you can do about it other than find replacement hoods.

But I've tried a few creams to soften them back up and the best I've found is E45 cream.

One other major factor is direct sunlight and heat also ruin hoods, keep the hoods out of direct sunlight
and keeping a bike in the shed is a bad idea due to the heat which can build up during the summertime.

Just out of interest, what type of hoods are yours ?

Re:

nothing tremendously special -- they are Shimano 600 EX that date from 1986 and they are starting to dry out . I'll give E45 or similar a go. Thanks.

Try a bath in a car brake liquid that contains silicone (I bought the cheapest one from Halfords). Leave the hoods completely submerged in the liquid for 24+ hours, after clean with water and piece of cloth. I had very positive effects with Universal gum hoods and not so good with black Mafac's half hoods. The very thin layer of top surface that was hard became white and came off with gentle rubbing and the hoods became more elastic. After the treatment the rubber kinda sweat (it looked like small drops of liquid appearing on the rubber for 2-3 days).
