Hi all.
After promising myself that I wasn't going to buy anymore and reduce the fleet by maybe selling a few off, I've gone and let myself down badly with another purchase. 🤦🏻😬

This thread here -

I kept coming back to it. It was the lure of that image from the 1989 Freewheel catalogue....and the fact that I was travelling down to Essex on other business that made the decision even easier. It was fated ....I had to have another dream bike from that catalogue. Already having a Pace RC100 and Ridgeback 604SIS means that I now have the 'trinity' that was such an inspiration to 14yr old me. Just the fillet brazed Ridgeback 605SIS (in a sensible size) to go now!

So. After a fantastic transaction with Lloyd, the Kestrel was picked up yesterday.
The bike has been 20 years in storage, so there's a little surface rust on a few components, but on the whole it's a survivor in great condition.
The whole Shimano M730/732 XT groupset is complete - right down to the pedals, bottom bracket and seat post.
The wheels are really nice M732XT hubs on Mavic M6CD rims.
There's not too many parts needed to bring it back to Catalogue spec - the obvious being the tyres and saddle. A few little details such as the XT Q/R Skewers are missing the rubber grommets, but hard to find bits like the Madison Air grips are complete and intact.

The plan is to strip. Clean. Reassemble - keeping the originality of all components.
The seat post wasn't stuck which is great news!
I'll rebuild the wheels as the rim logo placement Vs hub logo messes with my OCD
Maybe source an XT seatpost which is less worn, but this is low on the priority list.

More updates to come as the project progresses. The Serotta off-road Pro-flex prototype is nearing completion too... I'll probably focus on finishing this before starting on the Kestrel.

I'll probably take it for a proper ride too before starting any strip down.

Watch this space!

Cheers all.

Looks like the front brake cable isn’t routed through the stem pulley correctly.

I'm so glad it's been saved and now in good hands, that freewheel catalogue had so much influence as a kid. Pace RC100 the Kestral and those fillet brazed Ridgebacks. Memories which are ingrained into your brain, the RC100 was just the ultimate bike in the catalogue but the Kestral in carbon E Stay full Deore XT was on par with the Pace. Both bikes were polor opposites but my god did you wish you could buy both and now many many years later still do. Those two bikes sum up 89 for me and what made mountain biking so exciting , it was thinking outside the box, new innovations.
On another note though and being serious, where are those iconic Ridgebacks there's literally none ever come up for sale from 89 🤷‍♂️

I came here to say how glad I am to see this in good hands on here, then noticed Chris has said exactly the same thing and more. So pretty much exactly what he said! ^

I was sorely tempted myself

So glass this went to the best home! I have that Freewheel cat in y shop, along with my very first bike, A 602lx.

Looking forward to your magic on the Kestral. And the proto Pro-flex 😜👌😍

Nice!
Back in 1989 and still now, it looks like a bike from the future.
@JCS Yeah. It was the look of the Kestrel back then that had me sold on it. At £1795 back then, it was the stuff of dreams though. My mate at work said he paid the same price for his Escort XR3 back in '89
I agree. It still looks like it's from the future now.
Only the lack of suspension of any form confuses the uninitiated.

@Mkane Nice example you've got there yourself. That NOS example you mention on eBay makes mine seem a bargain!
I love the condition of this one though. It's a completely untouched survivor. Apart from the tyres and saddle, everything is as it left the shop. I'd imagine it came from a Freewheel shop in London given it's pick-up location and having been one family ownership.
According to the '89 Freewheel Catalogue (which would have been our source of purchase in the UK) the spec doesn't include the Odyssey Vapour Pro bars or stem. These must have been a shop upgrade when new, therefore the cable must have been set up like that from new.
Had the same stem on my (now departed) '89 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp. - that was a nightmare to set-up too. Any advantage of the stem cable routing being like that? - everything works in it's current set-up.

Had the same catalogue and drooled over these too. Great score mate!
@brocklanders023
Cheers Ed. Glad I've finally added one to the collection! The Trinity are currently lined up in the man cave in the same grouping as the Freewheel catalogue! Just the fillet brazed 605SIS needed for the full set now! 😎🏆

@Spanky22b
Exactly this! '89 was quite a year for making a want list! - I've got most - even my Classic Car is a 1989. Just thinking - what else would be on the list other than those bikes from the Freewheel Catalogue? - probably a yellow and blue Overbury pioneer. Maybe the light grey Marin Pine Mountain (before the Zolatone)
As for where all the 'high end' Ridgebacks have gone - there are very few left out there it seems.
My 604 SIS was a lucky spot that had been outed in the marketplace section here. I've only seen one other one on the forum. There's 2 fillet brazed 605 SIS on here too....but both are in a massive 22" frame size. What happened to all the 18" & 20" sized ones?
There's definitely more 602 and 603 models out there - naturally they sold far more of these than the top end ones.
By the mid-90's Ridgeback definitely had lost the brand status it had in the 80's. Can imagine most were disposed of as they were seen as 'fuddy duddy' in comparison to mid-90's exotica.

@raidan73
Cheers Adrian. Like you said in the for sale ad - looks like I saved a lot of RB members from getting into trouble with the purchase!
Buckled fairly easy to temptation If I'm honest! 🤦🏻😂

@Cristian-T
Thought you'd like this one! - knowing how much a fan we both are of that Freewheel Catalogue!

The Prototype Pro flex is nearly there. That's been a hell of a journey....but the end is in sight.
Loads of updates on the thread here -

Cheers all.
