I think Sinnett has touched on a good point.

I may be burned at the cross here and believe me no-one loves that yeti (well maybe mike) more than me but is it really retro? A grey area methinks, the three main tubes are certainly retro but the rest of the frame is a modern recreation.
How much of the frame is supposed to be original?
In my mind that is not really a C-26 but a modern (superbly done) replica. If i get Rody to make a new yo for me and paint it grello can i enter that in BOTM?
Anyway for me the stumpjumper gets my vote, its original, tasteful and brilliantly executed. More than any replica. The fact that it has not had mega bucks thrown at it means that with effort and a good eye anyone can achieve fantastic results-which sums up this forum rather well.

Agree completely, especially about the Stumperjumper which will receive my vote this month, Kaiser has really done a stunning job with that.

It's a toss up between the Raleigh and Stumpy for me too :)

The Yeti is seriously fantastic as is the thread, but I also can't help but being a little bit cynical about it somehow... It seems like the cycling equivalent of Man City's transfer policy it you know what I mean ;)

I fair point, one that I expected to be brought up at some point.

For the record, the rear end and BB are period correct, as well as the tubeset, but that goes without saying. The fork and fork legs are as well. The Headtube Chris made from old stock 1 1/4 steel he's had for 15 years, nothing new there. The only 'new' piece isthe seat junction.

Replica, no. Recreation I think is the better word. Say someone found a Yo with a rust in the seattube (perish the thought  )... and had that seattube replaced. Would it cease to be a retro / vintage MTB?

Here's another example. A few years back, a friend found an NOS Yeti Zephyr tubeset laying around and had Chris Herting weld it up. Would this cease to be vintage?

We can discuss I'm sure...

I agree with you Mike that recreation is a better word for it than replica, replica does not do the bike or your hard work justice at all. However for me the fact that you used a period back end or the fact that chris herting welded it is not really relevant IMO, it does not make an original C-26 or a Yeti. The fact is yeti cycles as a company did not make it in year X. The zephyr is not original or vintage as you say either. The yo is another story, it was a pukka fat that has merely been repaired but it began life as a yo.

An interesting point Lee and yes there is a difference but neither example is a true original example of the breed.

I do not want to take anything away from what as i have said is the most stunning bike on this forum but mikes bike opens a can of worms in IMHO, if it were an historic race car for example in would not be allowed to race.
