Bontrager Race '91 - Build Thread

Carge - great to read the updates - again, such great care with the build. The RetroGrom has finally forgiven me for selling the frame, I think - maybe because he has been ‘awarded’ so many new bikes recently - from a DH build through to a steel singlespeed….

The frame was so long at the back of the workshop that it’s great to see it loved and in sunlight…

Cheers PS
I think I took that before I’d twigged that the cable was slipping through the brake clamp.
I think the final version is closer to 90deg once I’d tightened the nut.
This is why I usually get someone else to do the fiddly bits 🤣

Don't worry, you could have it perfectly set-up for exactly the way you like your brakes to work and PS would have still brought it up! ;)

Looking great and glad to see this thread and build back from hiatus.

More!

No, i only bring up what i could better w/ what i learned. I am sure your brakes work perfectly fine for taking pics and all around media bruhaha, Pw... but you don´t know how to set up cantis. ;)
;) ;)

Come and ride a bike!

If there’s one thing I can actually setup okay it’s brakes.

(The rest of it is definitely up for debate tho!)

Might not be perfect, or to your exacting standards, but I bet any of the bikes in question you don’t lack for stopping power riding them.

Canti’s, cams or U’s!

Woah! Straddle angle wars. Love it. I played and played with straddle wires, canti arm angle, and v brake washers/spacers. Minor changes made a huge difference - to the extent that I could use two finger XT and bmx levers and still get oodles of power with the right fettled set up - but I did find chill pills to be dead useful in optimising things. The most power I got from cants were critical racing cants with chill pills and Aztec pads - up to v brake standards yet a lot earlier. The red anodising faded to decadent pink in the Sussex sun. Cool.

Hahaha.

I love fiddling with brakes, personally.

Bang some tunes on an need out. It’s so simple and yet so difficult at the same time! All the little tweaks you can make, depending on the brake.

As for the war:

It’s a long running battle. But always meant with good humour (on my end at least!)

Hold up - what's this?
Grab a chair - park your a$$es

The Bonty is done - got the wheels back from truing.
Bolts checked and tightened - American Classic skewers back on.

So a shakedown ride is planned for this week - summat gentle, hence the DMR DJ tyres for now.
