Bontrager frame - is it 'real'

I've just bought a bontrager frame, a privateer OR. Is there any particular tell-tale sign to know if it is a pre-Trek frame?

Trek bought out Bontrager in 1995. First Privateer was in 96. That in itself doesn't prove that Privateers were built by Trek and not in Santa Cruz of course, but at a guess it was probably so. Many others on here will know better.

i think the privateers were built at the trek factory, and this is why some people get a bit sniffy about them.

They still have Keith's geometry, and keith's choice of pipes, and would have been welded to a very high standard at trek.

they also build into lovely bikes...
