Boardman SLR8.6 women - thoughts after 1000km

I’ll always play devils advocate on Halfords since that’s where my journey in the bike industry started.

Bar tape, the bike will have come from the supplier with the tape fitted. Should it have been sorted if it interfered with the hoods, yeah, ideally but given the staff member that pdi-ed your bike probably had another 10-15 to do that day and is on minimum wage…

Bolts are a similar story. I’d check accessible bolts, if crank bolts had that annoying cover over them was I ******* prying that off to check them. If we’re talking non structural bolts then not checking them again probably down to the staff being over worked and under paid.

Indexing off gears isn’t so forgivable and is maybe due to poor training of staff. Ie, nobody is intentionally sending bikes out like that but if they don’t know better then this kinda shit happens. I got made ‘area trainer’ during my time with them. Basically because I knew what I was doing. Much extra do you think I got paid for ensuring everyone in my area was properly trained?

New bikes are only assembled at a factory. They are not ready or safe to ride despite what some manufacturers or shops will tell you. So any new bike will only perform as well as the person giving it a PDI/setup is trained.
Also to note, many bikes even above the 'budget' price range cut corners on various components to save costs. Chains being a great one. They look the same but a cheap chain can cause all sorts of shifting issues which a rider or even mechanic will struggle to pin down. Plastic pedals, naff cables, cheap inner tubes etc. I could go on...

Lastly you mention comfort. Cheap tyres & innertubes will dull the ride of a nice bike, never mind a cheap one.

I was actually working in Halfords when the first Boardman's came out. Bottom end ones weren't too bad but on the top end road ones the rear triangles were all pissed. The inside ring basically lined up with the smallest end of the cassette so if you tried to shift any moer than a couple cogs off the bottom of the cassette the chainline was so pish that it derailed at the front. Couldn't get it to stay in the big ring for love nor money!

Tried reporting the issue to head office and they were in denial.
