BNIB Pug Carbolite...with ridiculous price

Of course they are two different things.

Its value dropped as soon as the box was opened. If you were looking at this as an investment its unlikely you will see any increase in value over the purchase price for....decades. Even then something ridden but well maintained - like say a Colnago Master with Super Record Gruppo - will likely overtake it in those decades, value wise.

Maybe not totally relevant but check out this video on these fellas who bought a brand new in crate 1975 Norton Commando for....$17,000. Thats only slightly more than a well sorted and maintained Norton Commando thats been on the road for the same period. I think you need to wait even longer than 50 years to realise any significant increase.

And then theres the saddo element of not riding a bike. It was built to be ridden. Its a cheap bike, factory gates price less than 100 euro. Steel wheels, bottom rung components. Who would hang this on their wall as a show pony? If you were precious about it even the UV from having it out of the box will damage the paint in time.

I'd buy the Condor, either as a bike to ride or as an investment... but you probably gumessed that already.
Yup, good point well made. But I wouldn't say the Peugeot is worth anything as an investment -- just as an artifact in pristine condition. I could see it on display in a bike shop or cycling cafe. But if I had GBP1,500 I'd also buy the Condor because, like you, I'd want a bike I could ride for my money.

Amazing find and condition

Bike is average at best

Bonkers price...

...but still within reach of plenty people with their rose tinted eBay specs!

Nostalgia has a lot to answer for, just go and look in your garage, shed, attic or even bedroom*/living room*

*if you're allowed!!! 🤣

BSO with curiosity value and p*ss take price in my opinion.
100% agree! You can get some proper amazing bikes for this price.

Worst offender for crazy inflated prices was the recent re-re-launch of the Raleigh Chopper. They appeared on eBay instantly on launch day at crazy prices that were way more than a perfect original??? 🤪 It just doesn't make sense! 🤷‍♂️ But then that's why the world is so wonderful and all the old tat out the garage doesn't make any sense to my wife!

But... But... These peugeots were just awful!

'carbolite' - meaningless chuff to hide nasty low quality plain gauge steel

25mm steel seatpost

Nasty Rigida Chromonix rims, rustless spokes,

Weinmann brakes that never really worked as brakes, more of a statement piece to describe the act braking without the effect of braking

The stems felt like they'd never been greased as they always seemed to be seized

Clacky chain, clacky gears

There was nothing to recommend these when they were new let alone 40 years on

I actually have most of one sitting waiting for a rebuild

Waiting patiently for the build thread...

Look lets be honest, I had a Peugeot Carbolite framed 10 speed racer in the 80s and loved it. It was my first road bike after a BMX and I loved the ability to cover miles at speed compared to trying to harm myself jumping off and over anything I could on my BMX. I would still have that pug "racer" now for nostalgia if i hadn't outgrown it but..............even with my rosiest tinted specs, a whole heap of wanting to relive my youth and a huge (imaginary) lottery win in my pocket it is still a heavy old lump of low end bike! Maybe £300 tops to the right buyer after a very, very, very, very, very long wait imho

Worth a few hundred at best, probably more like a couple of hundred IMHO. Yes, nostalgia & yes , pristine and shiny but NO, not a great bike and not worth anywhere near a grand even if it is NOS.
