Yes I guess soSo the more yellowy ones must be the classics then?
Not a very puncture resistant tyre, considering what it is designed for. That said I've run it for commuting and gravel with no real problems on the Kocmo. There's better out there though, as all purpose, so I'd only buy if you like the look and they're on sale.i do like the look of the tan wall billy bonkers but are they really worth the money ?
i have also heard that they are abit prone to punctures aswell.
i get the impression that people buy them for their retro bike because a) everyone else has them and b) they just put them on there to make it look good as its the best tyre for display purposes. Not a very puncture resistant tyre, considering what it is designed for. And do take them on a muddy ride. That shit is fun. Skiing! They're not great in the wet once on a trail. Fine on road though.
I'd go for something else. There's a local town here where the youngings make a habit of chucking empty voddy bottles against the tunnel walls and Billy has gone ouchie and fizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz a few too many times there.i get the impression that people buy them for their retro bike because a) everyone else has them and b) they just put them on there to make it look good as its the best tyre for display purposes.
i would love tan wall tyres but im not going to jump on the bandwagon.
i want a tyre for my 1995 specialized rockhopper that rides well, gives good grip but can also be good at resisting punctures as i will be using it on my 9 mile commute to work when the weather better.
If you are more on the road you could look for a Schwalbe Hurricane. They are not very expensive, not too heavy, roll really nice and have a light puncture protection. No tanwall though.i get the impression that people buy them for their retro bike because a) everyone else has them and b) they just put them on there to make it look good as its the best tyre for display purposes.

Also a classic look for a low price tag offer the Vee Tires Mission MPC, tanwall but no puncture protection, but also light rolling and a little more offroad capable.

If grey sidewalls are okay for you then the Vittoria Barzo and Mezcal may also be a good choice if you can find them at a discount. I really like how smooth they ride.

Bernstein Continentals also have a classic look but they are not cheap and not so often available, around here at least. But the are fast and light and offer enough traction as long as it doesn't get too muddy. The Race Kings even more so.

I hope this helps a little.
Cheers!
Edit:
My favourite for offroading on vintage MTBs are still the Panaracer Smoke/Dart. They offer the most for the money on my local trails.
