Another talented graduate from the Witcomb USA venture, Chris now is famous for his industry trend setting “Fat Chance” mountain bikes… but before that he was a road bike builder in the great tradition. And, you will agree after viewing these pics from his late 70’s brochure, with a few of his own creative twists!

Francesco Cuevas, originally from Spain, was a citizen of the world until he came to settle New York City in the 1960’s. He was known to build his frames in the Old World style, that is to say using brass rod for brazing rather than the new fangled Silver “solder” and forsaking a jig, but “using the eye”. Nonetheless, his work had an artist’s flare and appeal. Francisco Cuevas has retired to Barcelona, Spain, with his wife and daughter. His son, Andreas, continues the tradition.

Mike Appel was one of the original Trek builders, and later a painter for Trek.
“…maintained pretty close contact with Trek, and a number of Trek builders used to hang out at his shop, including Joe Starck, Dave Tesch (both later with Masi CA), Chris Fiorini (with Waterford), Kelly Gamble, and myself. “
