bike racks and hubs

I had to transport a friends bike recently and noticed the cones on his hubs were loose. He normally transports it on racks on the roof, i always take wheels off and put the bikes in the boot. I joked at the time his bike racks had done the damage as the rim was clamped down and the bike probably was moving about.

Anyway, I used a tow bar bike rack for the first time last week, one of the one where the bike sits on its wheels. Riding yesterday, first time since using rack, and one of the rear cones came loose mid ride.

Is this just co-incidence or did I hit on something while taking the pee out of my friend?

Re:

Think about it.
Do you really think that a bike with no load on it such as it's rider, sitting still on a rack compared to being hammered down a hill, that just having it's rims secured in place would have any effect on the hub cones?
As mattr says, crap maintenance.
