Hey all, after showing my bike in the -97 forum, I think it not belongs here now. This is the old thread:- viewtopic.php?f=6&t=24954

Since it is going through such a big transformation, I thought it would be nice to show it here. The frame was collected today from the powder coater. I used a different company this time, a new startup that are specialising in car wheel refurbishment, I just wanted to test the water really.



Not bad at all, £45, which crucially included stripping the old colour off. My usual coater only paints, he has no provision to strip or blast. Very happy with the result.

In other news, the forks have been dropped off for the chrome to be stripped, and should be back with me next week. I have also been amassing some parts for the built, a good percentage has arrived already:-



I have also sourced a Sakae-Ringyo MS422 stem, and this has been cleaned up. The top loader bolts are new, safety first, but the quill bolt has been replated.



Ooh, ooh, and the stem came with some bars too, again they are proper Burner bars but as you know the shape of Raleigh bars is rubbish, so i have modified them. Compare these to standard bars, I have straightened them out a bit with the oxy-acetylene torch...

Me too! He he, great mass of trick bits. Gonna be grill. Love the lateral thinking. Got a few vintage Raleigh's I intend to chop up when I get round to it. Exciting inspiration...

Today has been pretty productive, I picked up axles, spokes, and nipples for the wheels, and also picked up the new brakes.

This evening I built the wheels, pretty easy as the hubs are symmetrical and the rims are stiff.



I still have the rear axle spacing to finalise, I will have a proper look at this over the weekend as I have a cunning plan.

On Friday I stopped on at work and made a few pieces for the bike. The first is a chainring spider, looks a bit like a tuffneck power disc, sort of.





The other bit is a dust cover to hide the redundant thread on the left side of the hub. I'm not sure if im happy with this, so I don't know if it will stay.





I'm itching to get this together, just waiting for the forks now.

My LBS is a nice fella and his dad says that the steel raleighs with bmx bb's were the best frames they ever made. This is an awesome piece of upcycling..

Cheers guys. FFTC, if weight is any indication of strength, this is one strong puppy....

Very close now, I called in to see the powder coater this morning, the forks and bars are penciled in for tomorrow, fingers crossed!

The frame is now stickered up, and looking good.



I decided to apply the 'Team Raleigh' decals to the seat tube, theres plenty of room there and it seemed daft to put them on the top tube and cover them with a pad...

And an explanation of the fork set-up.



I ran the forks straight 1-1/8th" ahead in the past, no problem, so I know the 1/8th" bearings are up to the job. The 1" threaded steerer is from a raleigh max, so has the correct 21.1mm i.d., this I stitch welded in three places, and then flooded the join with brass. It should be plenty strong enough...

So excited.
