Best square taper BB?

Another vote for UN72/73.

I've got a Phil Wood bb, it's still in the box over a year after buying it so just goes to show that the 'S' stuff is pretty decent. As soon as the Shimano dies the P.Wood will be fitted but it still keeps going on!

phil.wood.

took me 8 years of daily(i don't drive) use to kill my first one. the best, hands down

You can still raise it from the dead can't you? Just change out the sealed bearings.

Which reminds me, Phil Wood is one of the few companies that can still make custom cups...needed one made for an old Swiss frame years ago, Phil Wood made one with the "Swiss" threading for $160 USD...I had looked on eBay for months with no luck before that...yeah Phil Woods are awesome.

yup, i can have new bearing put in. but i liked it so much i went and got a ti version to replace my old steel spindled one :D

bonus: they are just down the street. i can just ride down there.

riding home tonight on a set of these(now if only they would make a headset)

Not sure if they still do them but Strong light did an ajustable chainline one which was very well made. non sealed.replacable bearings. I had one in about 92. it was tuff. It was similar to this with sealed bearings that you pressed onto the axel.

UN73 is discontinued and shops just have the last remaining stock. And although Shimano now make a UN74 instead, in all sizes, they are not being imported to the UK owing to 'lack of demand'. Cambriabike used to sell them, but seem to have stopped.

I wonder if anybody knows whether they are sold anywhere else in Europe?

try www.roseversand.de

they always have loads of stuff that it's "not worth importing" into the UK. Good service and used to UK customers.
