This may not be the best paint job ever, nor cheap, but it is out there. It's done by painting loads of layers then sanding the paint back to create the wood grain effect.

I always loved the Marin 'Zolatone' grey finish myself - anything with a Mil-spec look always catches my eye, and the pairing with flouro colours was inspired. I'd like to do a road/track bike in that scheme someday.

As for inspiration though, how about these two modern delights?
