Best "on road" mtb tyres

You could always try and find a pair of Specialised Turbo S which were basically a roadie slick but in MTB size. I had a pair (along with the matching tubes) but never fitted them and sold them on some years ago. Now THEY would have flown!

another vote for the city slickers - had them for years with little wear. In the end the sidewalls went from age.

Conti Top Touring get my vote every time :)

Run smooth and fast, excellent in the wet, few punctures - have 1.7,s on my pub bike as they are good for any unscheduled off road excursions too :?

Another vote for conti sport contact, fitted on last bike and came standard on my big wheeler. does the trick for me

Check Schwabe they have some fast rolling light tyres. They do a gumwall in the city jet tyre in 1.5 and 1.7 I think.

They also make the awesome-looking Super Moto, a performance version of their Marathon and Big Apple city balloon tires. It comes in 2.35!

I have been using Continental Sport Contact 1.6 for some time, I also used the thinner model, then a 1.6 on the rear and the thin one on the front.

They are guaranteed for a year against punctures, done me well the last 5+ years or so, and I ride just about every day of the year regardless of the weather through some pretty rough areas and poor condition roads and all sorts of surfaces.

Good value for a tyre which comes with an inner tube and 1 year guarantee.

If I was to fit another set I reckon I would try conti gatorskins.

I can recommend gatorskins. I've got them on my SS all be it in the 700c version. I've had them for 6 months now and I've never had a puncture yet (now I've said that I'll probably puncture tomorrow  ). They are the only tyre I've ever used that I can say that about. They're also very hard wearing, reasonably grippy and don't seem to pick up and debris (unlike Michelins  ).

All in all I can recommend these tyres. Money well spent imo.
