My brother has bought a very lightly used Hoy bicycle for my nephew for Christmas, like this one:

I offered to give it a clean and a once-over. Now i've wiped of some dust and given the frame a polish it looks pretty much brand new with hardly a mark or any signs of use on it. However, the white saddle and handlebar grips are a little bit grubby.

What's the best way to clean them, just soapy water, or something more exotic?

I always stick with black saddles, grips and bar tape, so I've never really had this issue.

A stiff letter to The Times

Or

Kitchen cleaner with bleach and something to treat it with afterwards - always use super clean cloths!

Re:

Ah, that would involve going to the shops, and what do I do with what's left, does it go with gin? :D

Housework.

Household cleaners contain optical brighteners, great for white saddles. Dont leave it on the grips too long.

I used to use Persil or Daz or whatever washing powder my mum had at the time for my white handlebar tape and saddle. Worked a treat 25 years ago, dunno if LGF's suggestion is better these days.

Tipex!!

Used to just use warm water with a bit of washing up liquid on my dh saddle, didnt get it 'persil' white but always looked a lot more presentable.
