Santos Bikes in Holland has a model coming up with belt drive. There is a bit on it on their website, but it in dutch.

i looked it up,..it does not say much only they will show a proto type at some hicking fair.
according to them it runs lighter, lasts longer, and is more quiet,..
we will see,..

belt drive IS going to be massive for s.spd & internal gear hub commuters & town bikes in future. the chainstays of most frames need to be stiffened up to prevent the belt from slipping.

Didn't Trek show a belt drive bike recently? I can see the benefits for road bikes, but mtb's will surely just catch loads of mud, twigs, etc and ruin the belt.

I think I am right in saying that you will have to break the frame to fit a belt (unless its an e-stay frame)

thats a good point, how do they do that? presumably the belt has to be cut and rejoined somehow?
there was this wierd arsed bike on ebay a couple of years ago with a monocoque like a full sus with a detatchable rear arm but no spring. looked like a rigid klein mantra. anyway had 14s rolhoff with belt drive. i seem to remember he implied it was a rolhoff option.
belts are more efficient in lab conditions than chains, lighter and cheaper but basically they are a bit crap when it gets wet and muddy. i guess that can be sorted by deeper ridges and decent pulleys.

belt drive

I like the look of that Orange

I use Alfine hub on my commuter bike and I'm pretty impressed. Sometime in future it will migrate either to my Evo or Supernormal.

If it could be mated to the 2 speed front rings that are being developed - eg
Truvativ's Hammerschmidt - now that would be sweet. especially if they can get the weight down see http://www.bikemag.com/news/freshproduc ... ndex2.html

Though the Schlumpf sppeddrive looks very neat http://www.schlumpf.ch/sd_engl.htm

The frame is usually split at the dropout or at the seatstay/dropout junction.
You can't break and rejoin the belt.

digging an old post as more belts and "chainrings" and "cogs" are available

anyone did try these ?

especially trandforming an old frame so that it can be opened

for example with such a framebuilder kit

or with a neat and smart trick from another schrewd froggie with a "thomson saddle bolt"

modificationforbelt.jpg

to get such a result on a surly frame

With a sturmey or a nexus that would be ace for a "workbike" ( the rohloff is really too expensive  )

There is a fairly new Trek SS with a carbon fibre belt. My dad just got one and swears by it. Well see what he thinks of it through winter.

Id love to give it a try . Does anyone have any links to places where you can actually buy the parts ?
