Banana - Cold Setting Frame (widening) with pics.

I'd echo Keithglos' remarks. I did a similar operation to re-space my Witcomb. Simply widening the back can leave the rear dropouts out of parallel. You may need to bend the rear ends inwards a little so they are parallel all along.

I used the lever approach (Sheldon Brown) working on each side to ensure that the widening was equal. The right stay can bend more easily if it has the chainring depression.

Re:

I used the Sheldon Brown plank method as well for a few bikes of mine,it worked well with me, I also got myself a cyclus dropout alignment tool just to tweak the dropouts, I’ve used friction shifters with 10 speed cassettes, and it works a treat with just a little practice you can get very fast clean shifts,
I won’t go back to index shifters.

Someone has over enthusiastically widened my Elswick, I'll measure it so you see how not to do it and so you can all have a larf.

Re:

I tried this method on my bike....

One stay spread more than the other leaving an asymetric backend!
I ended up using the plank method instead.
Having said that there are better (more expensive) tools for the job.

:-(

It's really worth adding another couple of tasks to your coldsetting:

1. Checking frame alignment after the coldset.
2. Realigning the dropouts post setting.

A few pictures of the same here. Can be done on the cheap too!
