bad reputation

at the weekend i went out for a ride with a few friends, were all keen cyclists, and have been into mountain biking and bmx long before we got into road bikes. however as weve all grown up weve seen the sense in roadies as you can eat some serious miles on them for very little effort compared to a heavy dh bike!

now my point is this, roadies have, to my knowledge, always had a bad reputation for being ponsy, arsey, stuck up, whatever you want to call it! this was only compounded to me when on our bike ride we stopped at a pub for a few swift pints, before we knew it it was 8.30pm and getting dark, we finished up and headed home as quick as possible as we had no lights, but this one guy in a passing car wound his window down, and shouted at us stating the bleedin' obvious that we need lights when its dark!
our beer fueled reply was "yeah mate, we know, carry on!"
then this guy does his nut and yells "I ride a hundred miles a week and ive got 5 bikes worth considerably more than all of yours!!" followed by some extremely french language!
At this point (whilst still cycling) we told him to royaly do one, but he kept turning around and coming back past to hurl more abuse!! which of course we duly returned in kind.

honestly, what is it about roadies that makes them want to behave like this, even to others on road bikes, it totally puts others off getting into it!
when i go mtb'ing, anyone you meet is friendly and polite no matter how good or crap your bike is, i just dont get it!!

rant over, thanks for letting me get it out my system

Roadies are just grumpy 'cos there's nowhere on their two-wheeled paperclips to store their moisturising cream... ;)

I've never seen a group of roadies gathered at the bottom of a steep hill, grinning ear to ear and discussing which line they took to get down it.
Road = fitness
Off road = fun!!

He was just frustrated at the amount of money he'd spent and was already bored with it :D

 Its highly possible the guy was an arsehole before he was a roadie not because he was a roadie! You may have met the salt of the earth in the hills whilst mtb'in but there is an equal number of arseholes there too! I use both a road bike and a mountain bike and have met several arseholes, I have also met a load of arseholes in other areas but I do not think they are roadies :?

+1 on those sentiments Kaiser

I have to say - that I am always astonished at the number of cyclists - both road and MTB that don't bother to acknowledge another cyclist. And yes, I ride both.

You'd think calling a cheery "morning" was some sort of insult!

And on another forum......

I was driving home the other day and nearly ploughed straight into the back of a group of cyclists... I didn't see them as it was dark and not one of them had any lights, tw*ts.

Tried to tell them (as a cyclist myself) that they should have lights or they're going to end up getting killed but they just gave me a load of abuse.
