Awesome Foursome Part 1 - Formula 1

Re:

Had a bit of fun last night swapping wheelsets between bikes. I always find this enlightening as often, the combinations you think will look ace, look crap and vice versa. Main objective was to try the Nuke Proof / Campy Stheno rims previously seen on the RC200 F1. Although I thought they looked good on that, I also thought they were a bit new, and American. I was willing to overlook the latter as the carbon hub tied in with the F1 frame and Pace fork. As it happens, although they look pretty good, the front hub does not have enough clearance to the fork bottom...

So, back in went the middleburns that have been sitting in situ for a while. And the Nuke Proofs will go on the Bonty, on which they look fabulous

It’s also the first photo with the 120mm Pace stem and X-lite Ti bars. A 115mm X-lite L168 Stem arrived a few days ago but it’s not doing it for me at the mo....

So many choices and so many lovely bikes ;)

.....and we’ll have to see if the purple odyssey svelt seat qr on it’s way from you, Tim, compliments it or tips it over the edge. I love this fine balancing act.

Re:

The Nukeproof hubs work miles better, they're colour-neutral and let the frame paint do its thing, yet they tie in nicely with the carbon fork legs creating a perfect balance. The Middleburns in my eyes are just too much and the similar colours detract from that epic paint job... just my two penneth.

Re:

Beautiful bike and a lot of thought going into the build, but I have to agree, I’m not sure the red hub colour works. Maybe a similar set in black / silver?
(Your bike, your call!!)

Re:

All good feedback which is exactly why I’m posting the pics!

I did like the Nuke Proofs but sadly they are not an option as there is no clearance to the aluminium dropouts of the RC35’s

The Middleburns are actually now a faded-pink colour and at certain angles match the paint perfectly. I too am not completely convinced by them......

What is not in doubt is their quality. They spin and spin. I’m thinking of getting them re-anodized in silver. I’m not sure how successful this will be. Anyone got any experience of anodising hubs (I guess it must be possible as the gold M737’s it came with were silver originally and they were done to an OEM standard).

The other “problem” with the Middleburns is they are 36h and all my rims are 32 so trying different rims is going to involve buying new ones.

I welcome your thought so keep them coming.

Saving the best ‘til last in posting on my 4-bike theme, although it was the first to be purchased in May

Again, a bit of an eBay impulse buy, I saw it with 4 hours to go, legged it upstairs to read the MTB Pro article on the “Sunburst” full-susp First Ride feature, stuck in a maximum bid, stuck in a higher maximum bid and then it was mine

There was a bit of hassle with postage so eventually I went to pick it up from Horsham. Fortunately I’ve got a best friend living there and I also needed to collect a tent from Newbury so it all kind of fitted in to place

The seller was a really nice guy who used to work at DPS Compositd who made these and the first batch of Lotus (Boardman) Road bikes. He told me some really interesting facts which I’ll share with you later.

In the meantime, here is how it looked when I got it..,,
Glad your happy with the bike. Was nice talking to you.
