Are all aheadstems hideous?

they are beyond hideous - i would say that in comparison to a cinelli record stem they are in fact quite heinous and should be smelted as soon as possible!!

+1

The fugly Meccano exposed bolt look ruins the aesthetics of a bicycle IMO. Nothing is prettier on a road bike than the old Cinelli Record stem iirc with the black C logo in the middle. On an ATB its Ringle Mojo or Syncros for me, with the concealed clamp bolt.

I think those old Dura Ace quill stems with the hidden bolt are some of the nicest, but I've seen some pretty nice old cinellis as well.

I think tall stems with a single bolt at the front suit classic frames quite well.

Re:

It's like a fake quill, very nice! I've seen them before but haven't been able to bring the builder to mind since before starting this thread...

The bar clamp could still do with a little work though, this is my favourite of the removable faceplate variety so far:

It's a bit beaky and angular though, so only works on certain bikes. I've got one on my Giant CFR Pro where it matches the angular lugs and I think works perfectly, not sure how well it'll suit others though...

It's basically a Grammo rip-off I think...?

The road version of this ?

Tioga's Alchemy desiogn is the same, but probably not fitting for road, they are smoothed out too.

Shame there isn't one with the wrap under bolt the mid 90's Marin Lite stem had, merge that Alchemy with this marin lite head

and I'd have a nice classy ahead stem for my MTB's and probably for road bikes too.

Re:

Yes the one I posted is a Velo Orange. There are other makers that offer them but I cannot recall any right now.

That's actually one of the nicest I have seen - who makes it?

It has the VeloOrange Emblem on the side, so I would guess it's this one.
