Are all aheadstems hideous?

Re:

Rod, thank you for those, really helpful! :D

I think the problem 'stems' (I am so very sorry  ) from the necessity for aluminium clamps to be so chunky, so steel or ti (I wish) must be the answer...

Single bolt clamps, despite their inherent bar-fitting woes, are definitely winning out too. Although as I've got a set of tri-bars I'm considering swapping in occasionally that might not be an option :(

The impetus for the question (in case you were wondering) is the impending arrival of a
>>drumroll<<
Deco Colnago Master frame

Way too good for me but there you go - will have to pull my finger out and get faster!

Eventually I hope to find the appropriate threaded steel forks, but in the meantime it's coming with some carbon ahead jobbies. Which leaves me with the stem dilemma. The only vaguely appropriate thing in The Box is a Syntace F99, so I'm now considering a fully black/carbon build until I find the correct forks and go fully silver!

But perhaps that's something for another thread...

Thanks for the help and input everyone :)

And by the way, that link to Feather just occupied my full lunch hour - absolutely love what they produce

Tend to agree. Not easy to find something in silver and retro looking. Personally think the early
Thomson with the hidden clamp are not too bad but are let down with machine grooves rather
than a smooth polished finish.

Although MTB, I've liked the smoother steerer clamp lines on the older Kore (available
with single bolt bar clamp which you could fudge for 26mm) and somewhat rarer Koski silver stems.

...don't get me started on upside down logos which is just so wrong.

Re:

they are beyond hideous - i would say that in comparison to a cinelli record stem they are in fact quite heinous and should be smelted as soon as possible!!
