My wife just bought a Suzuki Wagon r+, V-reg (2000) off Ebay.

Unfortunately the engine hiccups when you try and maintain a steady speed or around 30-40mph, it's ok when accelerating and at 70 odd mph (i.e. when under load I guess). Of course it didn't do it on the test drive, although the 'check engine' light did come on and off occasionally (but not permanently). I put that down to needing a top up of oil or water at the time.

I took it my local garage who couldn't get their diagnostic kit to 'talk' to the ECU, I then try an autoelectrics garage and they couldn't either, so then I had to resort to the Suzuki dealership....guess what. They couldn't either  Apparently as the ECU is so old (only 10 years..) they don't have the codes needed.

They've just told us we can either keep driving it until it gets worse then they'll be bettter able to diagnose from the symptoms. My wife won't do this as it's dangerous (probably true) or they start changing parts until it starts to work properly (which could get expensive!).

So, a) is there anywhere in the country that can plug into this ECU and get something out of it?

b) our previous Wagon R had a similar problem when we first got it that also nobody could figure out, then 2 years later we changed the exhaust and hey presto problem solved. I think it might have had something to do with the sensor in the cat converter, but that's only a guess. If we have to go down the changing parts route, which should we look at doing first?

c) what would you do?

Any help gratefully received!!

like a little postman pat van  her last one was great, just rusted through in the end. The newer ones are galvanised.

Will enquire about exhaust sensor.

Sounds like an iffy MAF (I'm assuming it's EFI system uses a MAF) sensor. Could be an O2 sensor, too (some cars have 2). Doesn't sound overly serious, it does sound like a sensor is playing up.

At the risk of sounding daft, what about the companies that do ECU re-mapping for the modified car scene? If anyone can get a diagnostic to talk to an ECU, it will be them. :?:

Had a SX-4 that did the same.. Got so bad that it was traded in. Wouldn't pull at roundabouts or stops or anything even with the foot on the floor in 1st..

Suzuki and other places all claimed no fault found. Keep an eye on it.

Yep sounds like a sensor, and I'd say MAF/AFM as well.

If they're anything like VW/Audi ones, they might be cleanable, before you shell out on a new one.

One very simple test is to unplug the MAF, and see if the car runs any differently.

If I knew what a MAF was I'd do it   can you point me in the right direction?
If it was that simple wouldn't the dealership have tried cleaning it out - or couldn't they be bothered or are they gormless? (Delete as applicable!)...

Please go back and punch whoever told you that firmly on the nose. If there is a loud crack and a large amount of red fluid pours from it, then I think that will be hard enough'

That is the most dangerous bit of advice I've ever heard given.   If they don't know what the fault is, how can they condone driving it in it's current state? God forbid Mrs O drives it, has to overtake a big truck and it cuts out as she pulls in.

Don't drive it until a reputable garage has done some investigation. Join http://www.suzuki-forums.com/forum-index.php and http://www.suzuki4u.co.uk/forum/ and see what their take is on the fault. Owner's Clubs tend to be a font of all knowledge.

I had something similar on an old Corsa. It proved to be a old worn distributor and leads. Not saying it will be for your car, but it doesnt necessarily mean the world's going to end.
When was it last serviced properly? Has it got any history?

agreed

will go on Suzuki forum.

Been a while since a service admittedly. Not much history with it except a change of king lead (prob trying to fix same prob?).
