The desk top has just stopped booting up giving the following message.

"Winlogon.exe - Unable to locate component"
" The application has failed to start because ole32.dll was not found. Re- installing the application may fix the problem"

My main problem is its the parents PC and they have no idea where the original boot up discs are

Is there anything I can do? :?

Cheers

find out what version of windows it is, make sure everything important is backed up to an external drive/media. Then do a complete reinstall.

Rob it is XP and cannot do anything on it to back or copy any important stuff. Bit worried as there are photos of dad last holiday etc :? where can I get install discs from if I dont have the original?

Have you tried to put it in safe mode first to transfer the important files? Press F8 on startup.

Take the disc out and plug it in a second machine you will be able to read the disc and fetch all the files off that way. I will suggest if you have not done this sort of stuff before you either read up on it , do it in the company of some one who knows, or get a pro to do it. If you accidently delete the files getting them back can be very difficult and expensive.

You are right. It's the best idea. So unplug the disc and connect it in other PC. Then copy all required files and data.
You have another option. You can run live UBUNTU. Then copy all. I think it's the best one if you have any ubuntu and a Large pendrive

You can boot from an xp installation disk and then use the manual repair option (recovery console). Type chkdsk /r. after you can also repair the boot.ini file using bootcfg /rebuild.

Thanks for the help everyone, tried what I could to no luck. My sisters friend is an expert on such things we have been told so its going over to him to be checked out.

Chris if things go pear shaped maybe I can take you up on your kind offer. Thanks
