Like you, I’m going for a nice frame (KHS Pro) and good bearings made to look a shitter. (Though not with your paint skill,level) Hex bolt skewers are a great idea (especially if not shiny) Luckily I’ve got some 80s nutted wheels; putting a shit lock on and walking away is the moment of truth.

I'm not an experienced painter, this is the first time I've resprayed an entire frame set, I only did a couple of stems before. I used to make a lot of model planes and tanks when I was a kid though, and really this is just scaling up the weathering and distressing elements of that.

The great thing about aiming for something that looks awful is you can let go of the fear of messing up. I'd struggle to produce the kind of high quality finishes we see lads in here pulling off, but old, worn and rusty - no problem.

It's a lot of fun.

Looking forwards to seeing the KHS.

Started the assembly today.

I decided not to mess with the mudguards, they already have a bit of rust and some dinks, plus how clean they are just serve to make the rest of the bike look worse. Found another saddle which was already quite tatty, I used isopropyl to rough up the lacquer, added some unneeded duct tape to make it look worse.

Tatty pedals were another garage find, as with the rest bearings are sweet, they just look bad.

Very pleased with how the paintwork has come out. I tested it on a mate when he came round, asked him if the frameset was worth saving, he had a proper look and told me it was beyond saving and to chuck it

Just brakes, shifter, cables, grips and chain to go on.

I've heard a few stories over the years of the rightful bike owner catching up with the thief as they struggled with toeclips or road STIs or fixed gear, loose rear QR...

I can't say I condone violence, but when it turns out the owner is a Cage-Fighter with an anger management issue...

Awesome paint job, it really does look incredibly convincing.

Should be fun on the road too when you're mixing it with the roadies on their shiny carbon jobbies. In car terms, it's a 'sleeper'.
