Another daft one - gears / life

Silly question, but does anyone here leave their bike in "8th" gear when stored, so the springs of the two mechs are not under any (or sod all) tension?

I was told to do that as well. Sounds sensible advice

i was always told to leave it in bottom cogs f&r so there was less tension on the cables (assuming you don't use a rapidrise shifter) to extend their life and avoid over stretching by leaving them under tension constantly or for prolonged periods.

+1

It's what somebody told me when I was a wee nipper, too. So now it's conditioned habit.

I reckon lowest possible gear is best for outside shop - chances are a thief'll just smash their knackers on the stem setting off, and if they do get going they'll only be doing walking pace :) That or chain resting on BB shell...

Another trick is to undo the rear QR. Chav jumps on the bike, stands on the pedals, rear wheel twists in the dropouts and jams in the brakes*.

*pounding on said chav afterwards is optional.

As we're doing the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ( O.C.D. ) thing I'd like to give one of my favourite " Tardis solutions " to a problem that's recurrent in my club, namely; for the most jammed seatposts on earth simply get in a Tardis, go back in time and GREASE THE BUGGER!

Sometimes, OCD can be sooooo cathartic.

Meanwhile, back at the thread topic...

Yes I do that too, although at the rear I haven't noticed any real benefit.

At the front I've found that if I've left it in the big or middle ring that initially some won't shift smoothly onto the granny ring - probably because they'd been put away after washing and not properly dry...

I do as well.

Although the commuter hack is always left in middle/middle so I don't have to think too hard early in the morning. Nothing worse than crunching gears and yelping after hitting a knee on the bars at 7am.

As for leaving a bike outside a shop? Really? Can't imagine doing that here.
