And today I did......

Re:

so, i'd promised myself a trip to Glen Affric to christen the Salsa,

woke up this morning, 10 degrees, fair-ish weather-wise...... perfect!!

loaded up the Volvo, and left, with the sky progressively getting darker and the temperature dropping the closer i got to my intended destination.....

sure enough, pulled up in the car park (the only car there) with 5 degrees and rain starting to fall....

Re:

got ready and off i went

this was a test as it hadn't turned a wheel since i built it, other than for photos, so i had no idea how it was gonna ride

lots of new things to try, wide bars, new pedals, new tyres and one of those wonky oval chainrings

but did i need to worry....?!

this face says not!! :D

Re:

by the time i got to the loch end and round to the other side, it was properly miserable, and then i encountered a wee torrent that needed to be crossed, somewhere

walked up and down, but the only safe looking bit to cross was where i took the pic, and with spd boots on, decided i'd have to wade through it rather than try to jump rocks!

it was knee deep :?

Re:

anyway, i made it round in two and half hours, soaked to the bone

even though it was awful weather, it was still spectacular out there, the only other life forms i encountered being a swan and three female grouse!

took my last photo, which was nigh-on impossible with soaked through gloves, and made my way back to the car

Re:

so, how was the bike.....

it was perfect, didn't need to adjust anything, not even the gear cable tension!

rigid forks - super tracking, very responsive, and held whatever line i picked

wide bars - offer amazing stability, don't know why i've held off so long! and being ti, they were very comfy

the salsa ala carte - totally un-fatiguing, and effortless to pedal, almost springy feeling, loved it!

the xtr brakes - best brakes ever, even water-logged, one finger would stop you on a dime

the oval chain ring - well, if i had to pick a favourite new bit of kit, it would be this. you have no idea that it's not a round ring your spinning, until you pick a low gear and start climbing...... it offers a super-smooth pedalling action, with what seems like constant power delivery. it makes for great traction on the loose stuff as there is no peak or lull in the pedal stroke. brilliant bit of kit!

so, a great (miserable weather) day out, and the perfect way to christen the new bike! :xmas-cool:
